My chocoholism strikes again.

Good Monday, all.
It’s a new year, and I haven’t gotten any better at this blogging thing. I tell myself it’s because I’m too busy or not disciplined enough. Turns out, it’s my parents’ fault. Procrastination has always been my greatest talent. Thanks, Mom and Dad.
I hope you all had a happy, restful, joyful, chocolate-ridden Easter. The no-sugar cleanse starts tomorrow, right? Something about spring — the appearance of budding flowers, bright strawberries and spindly asparagus, and the weather turning (hopefully staying!) warmer — makes me think more about light, healthy eating. Jessica sent me one of her handy meal plans, but I just need to get on the ball. See “procrastination,” above. Continue reading
Yes, it’s nearly April and I’m still a) wearing a coat and sweaters and b) eating soup. Winter, winter go away!

Brr.
At times like this when I can’t feel my fingers or toes, I need a warm, belly-filling meal. Just like (someone’s) grandma used to make.

Happy New Year, everyone! I hope you enjoyed some restful yet festive time with your loved ones over the holidays, and that 2014 holds exciting things for all of us.
I’m not really one for making New Year’s resolutions, since I can’t keep them past January 8. But I applaud all of you who do and can. A weird thing happened, though. I unknowingly made a resolution in May, on a normal Saturday afternoon, a time of absolutely no significance, and I stuck to it. I started exercising — consistently. (Trust me, no one is more surprised than I.)
And now I am athletic and outdoorsy. Continue reading
I’m in full holiday mode. There’s a permanent layer of sugar coating my kitchen counters and coursing through my veins.

Fall means apples. Thanksgiving means pie. I was a little down for the count this year, but that didn’t prevent me from baking up a bevy of desserts.
Very little stands between me and my kitchen. Especially when sugar, butter and flour are involved.

Good Monday, all.
I’m just dropping by, since that’s all I seem capable of these days. But these few random musings I felt compelled to share.
A couple of years ago, I had the good fortune to travel to South Africa, a life-changing experience. I never thought I would go to Africa — I never felt its calling, as some do. That is until I went. South Africa is a fascinating, devastating, infuriating, inspiring country, and I will feel connected to it in my soul for the rest of my days. It’s hard to explain unless — until, I hope — you visit yourself. So, though we knew it was coming, Nelson Mandela’s death last week struck a chord. He was an amazing man who lived an extraordinary life. Continue reading
These days, it’s dark early. It’s fuh-reezing outside. I’m permanently stressed out. That’s a looming, dangerous triumvirate — veritable DEFCON 5 territory that calls only for comfort food.
Very few items warm my heart and soul like cheese grits. Say it with me: Cheeeeese. Griiiitts. Mmmm. But it’s very important that you prepare them properly.

No, no. You’re not hallucinating.
It’s me. I’m actually writing a blog post. I know that hasn’t occurred since, oh, June, and now it’s, oh, November. But here I am.
There’s no good excuse, really. Just that this writing thing is hard. And sometimes I believe I have nothing interesting to say. And sometimes I overthink and overedit, resulting in a diatribe of incoherent thoughts followed by general posting paralysis. And my discipline begins to wane. So, sure, I’ve been busy. We’ve all been busy. But then a funny thing happened. Several other bloggers I read expressed the very same sentiments. We’ve all been in a rut together. Continue reading
